White Spots on Children's Faces, Know the Causes and How to Treat Them
A morning headache is a common complaint experienced by many people. This condition can disrupt daily activities and even reduce the sufferer's concentration. Therefore, it is important to know the causes and how to overcome them so that complaints can quickly subside.
A morning headache can occur due to various things. Some of the causes are relatively mild, such as lack of sleep or dehydration, and can be overcome with lifestyle changes. However, there are also causes that require further treatment, such as those caused by certain diseases.
Knowing what triggers morning headaches will help you determine the appropriate treatment steps and when is the right time to consult a doctor.
Causes of Morning Headaches
There are several factors that can cause headaches when waking up in the morning, including:
1. Lack of sleep
Lack of sleep, either because of staying up late or because of sleep disorders, such as sleep apneaand insomnia, can prevent the brain from resting properly. As a result, you can experience a headache when you wake up in the morning.
2. Stress and anxiety
Morning headaches can also occur when you experience stressand anxiety. This happens because stress and anxiety can disrupt sleep patterns and cause the muscles in the neck and head to tense up, triggering morning headaches.
3. Dehydration
Not drinking enough water before bed can make the body lack fluids (dehydration) in the morning. As a result, when you wake up, your head will feel sore, because your body loses fluids throughout the night without replacement intake.
4. Consuming caffeine or alcohol
Consuming caffeinated drinks, such as coffee or tea, as well as alcoholic drinks at night can also cause headaches every morning.
This happens because caffeine and alcohol can disrupt sleep quality and affect blood vessels in the brain, causing withdrawal symptoms in the morning, one of which is headaches.
5. Migraines or chronic headaches
Migraines and other types of headaches, such as tension headachesor cluster headaches, often get worse in the morning or after waking up.
A morning headache caused by migraines usually causes throbbing pain on one side of the head accompanied by nausea, while tension headaches make the head feel like it is being tied up. Meanwhile, cluster headaches cause sharp pain that can wake you up from sleep.
6. Wrong sleeping position
Incorrect neck and head position while sleeping, for example due to using a pillow that is too high or low, and a mattress that is too hard or too soft can cause neck and head muscles to become tense. As a result, you can wake up in the morning with a headache and all over your body aches.
7. Certain medical conditions
If your morning headaches happen repeatedly and are accompanied by other symptoms, see your doctor right away. This could be a sign of a more serious health problem, such as high blood pressure, sinusitisinfection, or even brain tumor.
How to Deal with Morning Headaches
Morning headaches that are not accompanied by other symptoms can usually be treated with self-care at home. Here are some ways that can help reduce it:
- Massagethe painful head area for a few minutes.
- Warm compressthe painful head area for 15 minutes to relax tense muscles.
- Use a comfortable pillow and mattress and adjust your sleeping position so that your neck is not tense.
- Avoid consuming caffeinated or alcoholic beverages before bed.
- Get enough sleep, at least 7–8 hours per night, and practice sleep hygiene.
- Drink enough water, especially before bedtime.
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.
A headache every morning can indeed interfere with morning activities, but in most cases this complaint can usually be overcome by doing some of the methods above.
However, if the headache occurs continuously, gets worse, or appears suddenly with other symptoms, such as vomiting, blurred vision, or weakness in some limbs, immediately chata doctor through the ALODOKTER application or make an appointment to consult a doctor to get the right treatment.
