When exercising, our bodies need certain nutrients in larger quantities to support body stamina. Well, there are several types of food that should not be eaten before exercise. Because these various foods can actually trigger fatigue more quickly during exercise and make exercise less effective.

So, you need to choose food that is nutritious, especially containing carbohydrates, and is easy to digest so as not to trigger digestive disorders during or after exercise, for example stomach bloating or nausea. 

Some foods that should not be eaten before exercise

Foods that should not be eaten before exercise are foods that have minimal nutrition and take longer to digest during the digestive process. Here are some types of food:

1. Nuts

Nuts are indeed rich benefits for body health. However, the high fiber content in nuts makes it take longer to digest and can increase gas production in the intestines. If you consume it before exercise, your stomach may be more prone to feeling bloated during exercise. Inconvenient, isn't it?

2. Red meat

One ​​of the foods that should not be eaten before exercise is red meat, such as beef or goat. Although these foods are great for strengthening muscles, their high fat content is difficult to digest into the energy needed during exercise. As a result, you may get tired more easily and experience bloating if you eat these foods before exercise.

3. Processed foods

Processed foods, especially ultra-processed foods, tend to be high in calories, saturated fat, salt and sugar. Moreover, many processed foods are made with additional sweeteners, for example cakes, biscuits, cookies, and fizzy drinks

These various ingredients, especially added sweeteners, are difficult for the body to digest so there is a risk of making the stomach feel bloated or full of gas after exercise.

4. Fast food

Fast food, such as fries and burgers, contain lots of fat and processed carbohydrates obtained from the manufacturing process. Well, these foods are not suitable for consumption before exercise because they take a long time to digest, so they are prone to causing stomach cramps which can interfere with exercise.

5. Milk and its products

Milk and its products are rich in calcium and vitamin D so they are very good for maintaining bone health. However, processed milk contains lactose, a natural sugar that is difficult for some people to digest. Apart from that, processed milk also generally contains fat. 

Both of these things make dairy products susceptible to causing digestive disorders, such as diarrhea. Therefore, avoid consuming processed milk before exercising. If you want to continue consuming it, choose dairy products that are low in lactose and fat, for example yogurt.

6. Spicy foods

Other examples of foods that should not be eaten before exercise are various spicy foods, such as seblak or other foods that are added with chili sauce. Even though it can pamper the tongue, the spicy taste of these foods can also travel along the digestive system and make the stomach feel hot, painful or crampy. 

Not only that, spicy food also speeds up the digestive process so there is a risk of causing diarrhea.

Apart from the various foods above, you should also avoid drinks that Contains caffeine, such as energy drinks or coffee, or alcohol before exercise. Not only do they reduce the benefits of exercise, these two drinks can also speed up the heart rate, increase blood pressure, and cause excessive shaking during exercise.

Foods that should be eaten before exercise

Now, you know the reasons behind some foods that should not be eaten before exercise. Instead, you can eat foods with the right nutrition to consume before exercise, namely:

  • Carbohydrate foods, especially complex carbohydrates such as potatoes and whole wheat bread, which are the main source of energy when exercising. 
  • Protein foods plus carbohydrates, for example wheat bread filled with lean meat, so that muscles remain strong and the body's energy intake is available. 
  • Drinks that do not contain added sugar and can meet fluid needs, such as water or coconut water.

Apart from the type of food, also pay attention to the right portions and meal times so that the nutrients in the food can be utilized optimally by the body. If you want to eat heavily, do it no later than 3-4 hours before exercising. Meanwhile, you are advised to eat just a little if you want to eat 1–3 hours before exercise.

Foods that should not be eaten before exercise need to be avoided so that the body gets the necessary nutrition and the digestive system does not have difficulty processing food during exercise. That way, you can exercise optimally and avoid various complaints.
