How does pneumonia cause death?

Pneumonia is still a serious threat to health, and can even lead to death if not treated properly. This is because pneumonia can cause the air sacs (alveoli) to swell and fill with fluid or pus in one or both lungs.

Well, swelling and accumulation of fluid in these air sacs will then disrupt the process of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide. As a result, oxygen levels in the blood will decrease drastically (hypoxemia).

If not treated properly, this condition can cause the organs in the body to lack oxygen. Over time, this can cause organ damage and even death.

Pneumonia can also cause death if the germs that cause pneumonia enter the bloodstream. The reason is, this condition causes the germs that cause pneumonia to spread and infect other organs.

Apart from that, germs that enter the bloodstream can also cause septic shock, namely a drastic drop in blood pressure that disrupts blood flow to the organs. As a result, organ function is disrupted and this can cause death. 

Factors That Increase the Risk of Pneumonia Causing Death

There are many factors that can increase the risk of death from pneumonia, such as the type of germ that causes pneumonia, age, congenital medical conditions, and an unhealthy lifestyle. The following is the explanation:

1. Types of germs

All types of germs that cause pneumonia can actually cause death if not treated properly. However, the risk of death increases depending on what germs cause a person to suffer from pneumonia. 

Well, some examples of types of germs that have a high risk of causing serious pneumonia and even death are bacteria Legionella and fungi Coccidioides. This is because the symptoms that arise due to bacterial and fungal infections are similar to other diseases, making diagnosis difficult. This can cause patients to receive treatment late. 

2. Age

Pneumonia has a greater risk of causing death in children under 2 years of age. The problem is, children's immune systems, especially newborn babies, are not yet fully developed so they are not able to fight infections well. 

Apart from children, seniors aged 65 years and over are also more at risk of experiencing serious complications, even death from pneumonia. This is because as we age, the body's immune system decreases so that it cannot protect the body from infection optimally.

3. Congenital medical conditions

Pneumonia can also get worse and cause death in patients who have congenital medical conditions. This is because the patient's immune system is usually weak and the function of certain organs has decreased. As a result, it is difficult for the body to fight other infections such as pneumonia.

The following are a number of congenital conditions that can worsen pneumonia and cause death:

  • Diabetes
  • Liver disease or kidney
  • Cancer
  • Disease autoimmune, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
  • HIV/AIDS

4. Unhealthy lifestyle

Unhealthy lifestyle, such as consuming alcohol and smoking, can also  cause serious complications and death in pneumonia sufferers. Consuming large amounts of alcohol frequently can weaken the immune system. As a result, the body is unable to fight germ infections that cause pneumonia. 

Meanwhile, smoking can damage the lungs. When someone gets pneumonia, this can make the lungs even more damaged, even unable to function at all.

Pneumonia should not be underestimated because in severe cases of pneumonia, the germs that cause pneumonia can spread to other body organs and cause life-threatening damage. 

Therefore, preventive steps need to be taken if you are one of the people at risk above. Well, one way is to do vaccination. However, if pneumonia has already occurred, this condition must be treated immediately by a doctor so that it doesn't get worse and cause death.
