Stages of the Fetus Starting to Move

1. Week 12

The fetus has started to move, although in small movements this week. However, pregnant women most likely will not be able to feel it because the fetus's body is still too small.

2. Week 16

In this week, pregnant women can begin to feel fetal movement. The movement is like the flapping of a butterfly's wings or a fish swimming in its stomach.

3. Week 20

At this gestational age, the fetus has begun to develop well. Pregnant women are likely to be able to feel the first movements of the fetus in the form of small kicks. This condition is referred to as quickening.

4. Week 24

The baby's movements are starting to become more pronounced this week. Pregnant women will likely feel it like twitching when the fetus hiccups.

5. Week 28

The fetus moves more frequently at this gestational age. A few kicks made by the fetus can amaze the pregnant mother and father.

6. Week 36

At this gestational age, fetal movements begin to slow down. This is because the fetus gets bigger so its space for movement in the uterus becomes limited. A healthy fetus will continue to move consistently.

Frequency of Fetal Movement Starting

After fetal movements begin to feel clear, pregnant women can start counting fetal movements every day. This is to ensure that the fetus is in a normal condition according to gestational age.

There are many ways to calculate the frequency of fetal movements that pregnant women can use. The mother can count how many times the fetus moves within 2 hours or calculate how long it takes to feel 10 movements.

However, pregnant women don't need to worry if they haven't felt 10 fetal movements in 2 hours. Pregnant women can repeat the calculation when the fetus starts to become active again.

Generally, pregnant women will feel fetal movements more often at night, to be precise at 21.00–01.00. This is caused by changes in blood sugar levels in the body of pregnant women. Pregnant women can find a comfortable position to start counting fetal movements, such as sitting or lying to the left.

Waiting when the fetus starts to move, including in the early days of pregnancy, is exciting for parents. To support fetal movement, pregnant women need to maintain health by consuming healthy and nutritious food.

If up to 24 weeks of pregnancy the fetus shows no signs of movement, or the pregnant woman does not feel the fetus move 10 times for 2 hours or more, do not delay going to the doctor. The doctor can perform a gynecological examination using an ultrasound to confirm the condition of the fetus.
