Causes of Green Baby Pooping

Green-colored baby poop is a normal thing to happen. This condition can be caused by various things, ranging from the milk consumed by the baby to part of the growth process. However, baby stool that turns green can also be a possibility of an illness.

As a parent, you need to pay attention to changes in the texture, amount and color of defecation in your baby. The reason is, stool color is one of the factors that indicates the health condition of your baby.

Causes of Green Baby Pooping

Newborn babies will produce dark green or black feces called meconium. This condition is normal and nothing to worry about.

During the process of growth and development, babies will experience changes in the color of defecation, ranging from black or dark green, yellow, orange, red to green. However, for some conditions, a baby's bowel movements that are green can be an indication of a condition that the baby is experiencing.

What Causes Baby's Poop to Be Green?

When babies are introduced to solid food, what they consume does not only affect the texture of the poop, but also the color. The green color of a baby's bowel movements can come from the food they consume, such as green beans, peas and spinach.

In addition to the food consumed by babies, there are also several other factors that can cause a baby's bowel movements to be green, namely:

1. Foods consumed by breastfeeding mothers

The food you consume can affect the quality of breast milk. Your little one's bowel movements can turn green if you eat lots of green vegetables or food and drinks that contain green food coloring.

Apart from food, iron supplements that you may be currently taking can also affect the quality of breast milk and cause your little one's bowel movements to be green.

2. Teething

When teething occurs, the body will produce excess saliva. Your little one could accidentally swallow the saliva. If too much is swallowed, this saliva can change the color of the baby's feces to green.

3.Foremilk or hindmilk

Your baby's green stools can also occur when he consumes too much low-calorie breastmilk (ASI foremilk) and receives too little high-fat breastmilk (ASI hindmilk) .

Foremilk is the thin milk that comes out for the first time when the mother is breastfeeding, while hindmilk is the milk that is thicker and appears at the end of the process of breastfeeding.

To fix this, let your little one suckle on one side of the breast longer to get higher milk fat. Apart from that, you can also start the breastfeeding process with the side of the breast that your little one sucked last

4. The baby has allergies

The green defecation experienced by your little one can occur because he has allergies. Allergies can be triggered by food or formula milk given to your little one

Take a look, if your little one's poop is green every time he is given breast milk or certain foods and this condition is accompanied by a rash, itching, the baby looks fussy, or sneezes a lot, then this could be a sign that he has an allergy.

5. The baby has diarrhea

Your little one's green poop can also indicate that he is experiencing diarrhea. You can suspect your little one has diarrhea if the frequency of bowel movements becomes more frequent than usual, looks weak, and has diarrhea when defecating.

You also need to be careful if your little one has diarrhea accompanied by a number of other symptoms, such as fever, nausea and vomiting, lack of desire to breastfeed or eat, dry mouth, no tears when crying, and looks weak or not as active as usual.

These symptoms indicate that the diarrhea your little one is suffering from has made him dehydrated. The solution, give your little one breast milk more often than usual.

If your little one can eat solid food, give him breast milk or more milk and oral rehydration fluids (eg pedialite or ORS) every time he defecates or vomits.

However, if within 24 hours the diarrhea does not improve, immediately take your little one to the doctor. You also need to take him to the doctor if green bowel movements have occurred for more than 5 days accompanied by a lack of desire to eat or drink, appear weak, and experience weight loss.
