6 Ways to Prevent TB that are Effective and Need to Be Done
How to prevent TB needs to be implemented considering that TB is a type of infectious disease that can be spread through splashes of the sufferer's saliva when talking, coughing or sneezing. To protect yourself from TB, you can take some simple steps, such as wearing a mask and washing your hands.
TB or tuberculosis is no stranger to Indonesia. Even as a way to prevent tuberculosis, the government has made it mandatory to administer the BCG vaccine (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) for children.
TBC is a type of infectious disease caused by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis which generally attacks the lungs. However, this type of bacteria can also infect other organs, such as the spine, brain and kidneys
TBC symptoms will usually appear gradually and get worse within a few weeks. These symptoms include a cough that doesn't go away even with phlegm or blood, chest pain, fever, night sweats, unplanned weight loss, and loss of appetite.
Several Ways to Prevent TB
TB bacteria multiply in the lungs. Thus, these bacteria can spread through air contaminated by droplets of tuberculosis sufferers. To avoid transmission of this disease, you can take the following steps to prevent TB:
1. Avoid contact with TB sufferers
When a TB patient coughs, sneezes or talks, he will sprinkle droplets containing TB bacteria into the air. These droplets will cause the transmission of TB infection. The risk of transmission can increase if you are in a closed, unventilated room with a TB patient for a long time.
Therefore, one way to prevent TB, you can avoid contact with TB sufferers.
2. Use a mask
When you are in a public place, such as a mall, market, or public transportation, you may not know the health condition of the people around you. To avoid transmission of TB from sufferers who accidentally cough or sneeze near you, you should wear a mask.
You also need to wear a mask if you work in a health facility, such as a hospital or clinic.
3. Wash your hands
During activities, you often don't realize that you have touched any object. You don't even know whether the object has been contaminated with TB bacteria or not. Washing your hands can remove dirt and bacteria on your hands, including TB bacteria.
You wash your hands properly for at least 40 seconds using soap as a way to prevent tuberculosis. Rub both hands, including the back of the hands and between the fingers, with soap until evenly distributed. After that, dry your hands with a tissue or clean disposable towel.
4. Maintain endurance
Weak immune system can increase the risk of being infected with TB. There are several ways you can do to boost your immune system and body resistance to avoid TB, such as exercising regularly, eating fruits and vegetables, maintaining an ideal body weight, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and stopping smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages.
5. Do not exchange personal items
Another way to prevent TB is to avoid close contact with sufferers, either by meeting face to face or by sharing personal items.
To prevent TB transmission, you should be more careful, especially when exchanging personal items, such as cutlery, cups, toothbrushes, clothes or towels, with other people.
6. Get the vaccine
Vaccines are an effective way to prevent TB. In Indonesia, the BCG vaccine has been included in the list of mandatory immunizations given to babies before they are 2 months old.
Not only for children, adults are also advised to get the vaccine if they have never received it and have family members who have TB.
If you have been diagnosed with TB, follow the treatment instructions given by the doctor. Stopping or changing the rules of taking medication without a doctor's supervision can cause TB germs to become resistant and even more virulent, as well as increase the risk of transmission to other people.
There are many ways to prevent TB. However, if you accidentally come into close contact with a sufferer or experience symptoms of TB, you should not panic and immediately consult a doctor if you experience some complaints that resemble TB symptoms. Thus, you can get proper inspection and treatment.
