1. Erythromycin

Conjunctivitis is a common eye disease. This condition is often caused by viral infections or allergies, so it generally goes away without any treatment. However, it is possible that this condition is caused by a bacterial infection

Conjunctivitis infections caused by bacteria can last for days and require treatment, one of which is eye ointment containing the antibiotic erythromycin. Eye ointment containing erythromycin works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause eye infections.

This ointment can be used by newborns to adults. The dosage for use is still adjusted according to the doctor's advice

For adults, this ointment can generally be used up to 6 times a day, depending on the severity of the infection. Meanwhile for newborns, the use of this ointment is carried out directly by a doctor and aims to prevent or treat neonatal conjunctivitis.

2. Fusidic acid

The eye ointment that also comes from the antibiotic group is fusidic acid. The antibiotic content in this eye ointment will treat bacterial conjunctivitis by stopping the growth of the bacteria that cause the discharge.

Belek eye ointment containing fusidic acid is safe to use for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children. This ointment can be used 3–4 times a day for 1–2 weeks, depending on the severity of the infection.

3. Ciprofloxacin

You can also use eye ointment from another class of antibiotics, namely ciprofloxacin. This ointment can treat eye discharge due to bacterial conjunctivitis by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infection.

Ointment ciprofloxacin is not recommended for use by children younger than 2 years. Make sure you always use this eye ointment according to doctor's recommendations.

4. Neomycin-polymyxin b-bacitracin

Unlike the various eye ointments above which have a single active ingredient, this eye ointment is a combination of several antibiotics, such as neomycin, polymyxin b, and bacitracin.

This eye ointment is not only used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, but also blepharitis and bacterial keratitis. This ointment is for adults only and can be used up to 6 times a day, depending on the severity of the infection

5.Acyclovir

Spoiling can also be caused by viral infections, one of which is the herpes simplex virus. To overcome this, the doctor will prescribe an eye ointment containing cyclovir.

Acyclovir will work by stopping the development of the herpes simplex virus and preventing it from multiplying

This eye ointment can be used up to 5 times a day, or once every 3 hours, depending on the severity of the infection or according to the doctor's recommendations.

6. Dexamethasone

Apart from viral and bacterial infections, eye discharge can also be caused by allergies. One of the eye drops that can treat eye discharge due to allergies is an ointment containing dexamethasone.

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid drug. This drug works by reducing inflammation that occurs in the eye discharge due to allergies. This eye ointment can be used by adults. dexamethasone ointment is used 3–4 times a day until the complaint improves.

To prevent the infection from getting worse, wash your hands before and after applying the eye ointment. Also, don't share the use of the ointment with others and don't wear contact lenses while the medication is in progress

After applying eye ointment, your vision will be blurred for a few minutes. You don't need to worry because this is normal. However, immediately stop using it and go to the emergency room if you experience allergy symptoms after using the eye ointment.

You can also compress your eyes to reduce swelling and itching of the eyes. Use cold water compresses on the infected eye area several times a day until it gets better.

If your complaint does not improve after using eye ointment and cold compresses, check with your doctor for further treatment.
