Chemical pregnancy is a miscarriage that occurs before the gestational age reaches 5 weeks. Because miscarriage occurs so early, many women are not aware that they are pregnant and the symptoms are often mistaken for a sign of menstruation.

The Causes of Chemical Pregnancy

The exact cause of chemical pregnancy is not known. However, in many cases, this condition occurs because the fertilized egg has a chromosomal abnormality so that the embryo cannot develop.

Every woman can experience a chemical pregnancy, but there are several factors that increase a woman's risk of experiencing a chemical pregnancy, namely:

  • Get pregnant at age 35 or older
  • Uterine deformities
  • Unstable hormone levels
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Thyroid disorders, diabetes, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Underweight

Chemical pregnancy does not require special medical treatment if it is not accompanied by complications, such as heavy and continuous bleeding from the vagina. If such bleeding occurs, you need treatment from a doctor.

Chemical pregnancy does dash the hopes of you and your partner who have been waiting for the arrival of a baby. However, keep in mind that your chances of getting pregnant again are still there even if you have had a miscarriage.

If you experience a chemical pregnancy more than 1 time, the doctor will do tests to find out the cause and reduce the risk of miscarriage occurring again while undergoing a pregnancy program.
