Sore Throat on the Right, Know the Causes and Prevention

Anyone can experience sore throat on the right. This condition is generally considered harmless and can heal on its own. However, a sore throat on the right side still needs to be watched out for because it can be a symptom of a medical condition that requires treatment by a doctor.

A sore throat will usually cause pain throughout the throat when swallowing. However, sore throat on one side can also occur, both right and left sore throat.

1. Canker sores

Even though they are small in size, canker sores can be very painful to the point of causing a sore throat on the right. Canker sores can appear in all parts of the oral cavity, starting from the tongue, gums, inner cheeks, lips, to the back of the oral cavity which is close to the throat.

3. Postnasal drip

4. Tonsillitis

5. Peritonsillar abscess

The appearance of pus around the tonsils due to a bacterial infection is known as a peritonsillar abscess. In many cases, peritonsillar abscess is caused by the same bacteria as the bacteria that cause tonsillitis.

6. Laryngitis

Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx or part of the throat where the vocal cords are located. Generally, laryngitis causes changes in your voice, ranging from hoarseness to disappearance.

However, it is not uncommon for laryngitis to also cause sore throat on the right, especially if the inflammation occurs on the right side of the larynx.

7. COVID-19

COVID-19 is often characterized by respiratory problems, such as coughing and shortness of breath. In some people, the disease caused by this coronavirus infection can also cause sore throat on the right and left.

8. Swollen lymph nodes

There are many lymph nodes in the human body, one of which is in the neck. Lymph nodes work as the body's natural defense against viruses and bacteria that cause infection.

Lymph nodes can swell when they work too hard to fight infection. However, this condition is not a disease.

You can experience a sore throat on the right if there is an infection that causes the lymph nodes on the right side of the neck to swell.

9. Trigeminal neuralgia

Pressure on the facial nerve, also known as the trigeminal nerve, can cause sore throat on the right. This condition is also known as trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia can be triggered by facial injuries, dental surgery, facial swelling, or tumors.

10. GERD

Unknowingly, GERD can also cause sore throat on the right. This condition occurs when stomach acid continuously rises to the throat, and eventually damages the lining of the right and left throat.>Basically, right-sided sore throat can be prevented by avoiding the occurrence of the various factors above. Steps that can be taken include:

  • Wash your hands with soap and running water, especially after using the toilet, sneezing or coughing, to prevent transmission of viral and bacterial infections.
  • Brush your teeth 2 times a day and routinely check the condition of your teeth to the dentist every 6 months.
  • Drink enough water.
  • Consume a vitamin B12 supplement.
  • Avoid eating foods that can increase stomach acid.
  • Avoid shouting or speaking loudly, especially for a long time.
  • Avoid direct contact with someone who has a sore throat or is showing symptoms COVID-19.

How to treat a sore throat on the right must be adjusted to the cause. Apart from that, you can also consume more water and lozenges to relieve the symptoms.
