Getting around How to Take Medication During Fasting

In addition, usually taking medicine is also followed by consuming water. If you are fasting, of course this will break your fast.

How to take medicine during fasting

When fasting in Ramadan, you cannot eat or drink for about 13 hours. So that you are not confused in the process of adjusting how to take the medicine, here is an explanation and an example of the medicine:

Medicine once a day

Medications that need to be taken once a day do not have significant adjustments during the fasting month. The medicine can still be consumed at night after breaking the fast or in the morning at dawn.

For example, antihypertensive drugs that are used once a day should be consumed at mealtime. This is so that the drug can control blood pressure during activities during the day.

Medications for ulcers that are consumed once a day, such as omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole, or pantoprazole, are recommended to be taken at night before going to bed.

Meanwhile, the anti-diabetic drugs glimepiride, glibenclamide, or glipizide can be taken when breaking the fast because at this time the blood sugar level after eating tends to increase.

For cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as simvastatin, atorvastatin, or rosuvastatin, it is recommended to be taken at 7–9 pm or before bedtime because the drug's effect is better at that time.

Medicine 2 times a day

Medicines taken 2 times a day can be consumed at dawn and breaking the fast. Medicines taken before mealtime can be consumed before eating sahur, before eating the main meal when breaking the fast, or after breaking the fast.

Medications for ulcers that are consumed 2 times a day, such as ranitidine, cimetidine, or famotidine, are recommended to be taken at night before going to bed and at mealtime. This is because stomach acid levels are higher at night, so if you drink it at night it can prevent stomach acid from rising

Meanwhile, the anti-diabetic drug metformin which is taken 2 times a day is recommended to be consumed when breaking the fast and at night before going to bed. It is important to remember, avoid taking anti-diabetic drugs at mealtime to prevent hypoglycemia during the day.

Medicine 3 times a day

The medicine is taken 3 times a day at dawn, breaking the fast, and at midnight around 11 o'clock. Make sure the medicine is taken at the same time. If possible, you can consult a doctor to change the type of drug that has a less frequent drinking frequency.

For example, the hypertension drug captopril taken 2–3 times a day can be replaced with lisinopril which is consumed once a day.

Medication 4 times a day

Medicines taken 4 times a day, consume at dawn, breaking the fast, at 11 pm and 1 am. Actually, the use of this type of drug taken 4 times a day is not recommended when fasting. Therefore, consult with your doctor to change the type of drug that has a smaller consumption range.

In addition to the time of consumption, the rules for taking medicine can also be before or after eating. For medicines taken before eating, you can take them 30 minutes before eating sahur or 30 minutes before eating a big meal when breaking the fast.

If you need to take medicine in the middle of the night with the rule after eating, you should fill your stomach first. You can eat snacks such as bread before taking medicine.

After reading the explanation above, you are not confused about taking medication during fasting, right? If you are currently taking medication, especially if the frequency of taking medication is frequent, you should consult with the doctor to determine the right time to take the drug or maybe change it to another type of drug.
