The Right Time for Maternity Leave and its Benefits for Working Mothers
Wow, Mother's time of delivery is getting closer. here it's time for Mother to take maternity leave and start preparing for childbirth. However, do you know when is the right time for maternity leave and are there any benefits?
Working during pregnancy has its challenges. Pregnant women must focus on the health of themselves and their fetus, as well as completing work demands. Not to mention that complaints and changes in body shape during pregnancy can affect the physical and mental condition of pregnant women.
Well, when the gestational age increases and the delivery time approaches, pregnant women are given special time to prepare themselves for childbirth. This special time is called maternity leave.
The Right Time for Maternity Leave
Maternity leave is one of the pleasures felt by working pregnant women. Provisions for this leave have been regulated by the Indonesian government in Law no. 13 of 2003 concerning Manpower.
Based on this law, working pregnant women are entitled to 3 months of maternity leave without losing their wages and job position. Taking maternity leave can be taken within 1.5 months before giving birth and 1.5 months after giving birth.
However, the time for taking maternity leave can be adjusted again to the conditions and agreement with the office. Most pregnant women start their maternity leave when the gestational age is 34-36 weeks or approaching the due date (HPL).
If pregnant women have certain health complaints or problems, pregnant women can follow the doctor's advice regarding when to take leave. Statements from doctors or midwives stating that pregnant women need a longer break than the provisions or rules can be considered for additional maternity leave.
Benefits of Taking Maternity Leave
As previously explained, maternity leave is intended so that pregnant women can prepare themselves to give birth and care for their babies. For more details, here are the benefits of maternity leave that you need to know:
- Allows time for the mother to adapt to new roles and responsibilities due to the new baby
- Helps mothers to be able to rest, as well as reduce stress because they do not have to take full responsibility at work
- Reducing the mother's risk of experiencing postpartum depression
- Allows time for the mother to optimally recover physically and mentally after childbirth
- Giving more time and opportunities to attend prenatal classes, such as yoga for pregnant women, learning breathing techniques, or learning how to care for the baby
- Giving time for the mother to be able to care for and strengthen the bond with her baby
In addition to the benefits above, one study stated that there is a link between the duration of leave and the risk of death in newborns. In this study it was stated that longer maternity leave could reduce infant mortality and support the health of mothers and children in the future.
It's not only mothers who need leave, if possible, fathers also need to take time off when their wife gives birth. This special time is an opportunity for the father to take care of the baby and help his wife who is currently in the recovery phase.
So, Mother, let's use your maternity leave well. All of this is important for the health and safety of Mother and fetus. Don't forget to prepare important things before maternity leave, such as informing your boss and preparing documents for replacement employees or colleagues.
