Panleukopenia is caused by feline parvovirus and usually affects kittens and cats that have not been vaccinated. This virus can infect and damage a cat's organs, such as bone marrow, intestines and skin. Panleukopenia can also affect feline fetuses in pregnant cats.

This can happen because parvorvirus infection can interfere with the process of forming the cat's fetal brain. Kittens born with this disorder can experience movement difficulties, developmental delays, or even lifelong disabilities

In addition, kittens can also be infected through breast milk when suckling from a mother cat who has been exposed to the virus.

Cats that have no symptoms but carry the virus that causes panleukopenia, can also spread the virus to the environment through their faeces, urine, saliva and vomit.

Treatment of Panleukopenia

Until now, there is no treatment that can cure panleukopenia in cats. Handling is only given to relieve the symptoms experienced by cats when exposed to this disease and prevent dangerous complications from occurring

For example, if a cat becomes dehydrated when it has panleukopenia, the doctor will provide intravenous fluid therapy, while the symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea can be treated by administering drugs.

In addition, the doctor may also give antibiotics to prevent bacterial infections that are at risk of occurring while the cat is sick. This is because panleukopenia can weaken a cat's immune system, making it more susceptible to infection

How to Prevent Panleukopenia

Considering that this disease is easily transmitted and can be dangerous if left untreated, it is important to do prevention so that your beloved cat does not get panleukopenia, one way is by administering the panleukopenia vaccine to cats.

This vaccine can be given when the cat is 8 weeks old and is usually repeated every 1-3 years. Apart from vaccinations, it is also necessary to maintain the cleanliness of cats to prevent panleukopenia. Therefore, wash the cat's cage, food bowl, drinking bowl, toys, and bedding regularly.

The virus that causes panleukopenia can also live on human hands and clothing. Therefore, wash your hands with soap after handling the cat to reduce the risk of transmission to other cats.

In order to be safe from the transmission of panleukopenia, it is best if your pet cat that has been vaccinated is not placed together with cats that have not been vaccinated.

Panleukopenia can be cured if cats get treatment as early as possible. Therefore, if your cat shows symptoms of panleukopenia or seems suddenly sick and weak, take it to the vet immediately so that your cat gets proper treatment.
