Symptoms and Treatment for Centipede Bites

A centipede bite can cause pain, swelling, itching, and redness in the bitten area. If the complaint is not severe and there are no signs of complications, the wound from being bitten by a centipede can be treated with home care.

Centipedes or centipedes are not insects that are aggressive towards humans. However, these insects do not hesitate to bite and release poison when they feel threatened.

Symptoms and Treatment for Centipede Bites

Basically, the venom from a centipede's bite is harmless. However, if not treated quickly, a centipede bite can cause a mild to severe allergic reaction.

Symptoms of being bitten by a centipede

A centipede's bite can be identified by the two reddish dots forming the letter "V". Generally, the symptoms of being bitten by a centipede are not the same for everyone. The pain caused can vary, depending on the amount of poison that enters the body.

The following are common symptoms that occur when bitten by a centipede:

  • Pain in the centipede bitten area
  • Redness
  • Swollen
  • Itching and burning sensation
The symptoms of being bitten by a centipede usually go away within a few hours or days. However, in more severe cases, a centipede bite can cause anaphylaxis or a severe allergic reaction. If not treated immediately, this condition can be life threatening.

The following are severe symptoms caused by a centipede bite:

  • Itching is getting worse
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Severe skin infections
  • Bleeding in the area of the centipede bite
  • Heart pounding
  • Severe swelling of the part of the body bitten by the centipede
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swollen lymph nodes

If you experience any of the above symptoms after being bitten by a centipede, immediately go to the nearest doctor or hospital.

The venom in some types of centipedes can also affect the nervous system and cause dizziness, anxiety, memory problems, or feelings of excessive happiness (euphoria). However, these symptoms are very rare.

Centipede Bitten Wound Treatment

Going to the doctor immediately is a wise choice when you are bitten by a centipede or other insect, as a form of first treatment. However, if the complaint is not severe and there are no signs of complications, you can still treat the wound from a centipede bite with home care.

The following are treatments you can do to treat a centipede bite:

Clean the wound

When you are bitten by a centipede, clean the wound immediately with running water and soap to reduce the risk of infection. Avoid cleaning the wound bitten by a centipede with alcohol.

Compress or soak the body part with warm water

After the wound is cleaned, soak or compress the body part bitten by the centipede with warm water. This is done to open the skin pores so that the centipede poison can be removed slowly.

After that, compress the body part bitten by the centipede with cold water for 10 minutes to reduce itching, pain, and swelling.

Drug consumption

You can also take over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help relieve the symptoms caused by a centipede bite.

The above treatment for a bitten wound is effective in reducing the pain and symptoms you are experiencing. However, if the symptoms you feel are getting worse, such as high fever, widespread itching, palpitations, swelling of the face and throat, even shortness of breath, immediately go to the doctor for treatment.
