Pores are small holes in the skin that expel oil and sweat. Clogged pores can occur when dead skin cells, oil, and dirt get trapped in the skin. In addition, clogged pores can also be caused by exposure to pollution, a humid environment, or the use of certain drugs that affect the production of oil glands in the skin.

5 Effective Ways to Prevent Clogged Pores

Clogged pores can lead to the appearance of blackheads or whiteheads and acne. To prevent clogged pores, make sure you avoid the contributing factors and lead a healthy lifestyle.

How to Prevent Clogged Pores

Clogged pores are most common in teenagers and adults, as well as those with a family history of similar skin complaints. However, that doesn't mean there isn't a way to prevent it.

Here are some steps you can take to prevent clogged pores:

1. Clean your face twice a day

To keep pores clean, clean your face twice a day with lukewarm water and a gentle facial soap that suits your skin type. Then, gently dry your face with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing the towel on your face so as not to irritate the skin.

Cleaning the face twice a day aims to remove dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells that can cause clogged pores. However, avoid cleaning your face more than twice a day so as not to strip the skin of its natural moisture

2. Doing double cleansing

After using make up or doing outdoor activities all day, it is recommended that you do double cleansing so that your face is thoroughly clean. If make up is not cleaned properly, skin pores can become clogged and lead to acne breakouts.

Double cleansing is a technique of cleaning the face twice. This technique begins with cleansing the face using an oil-based cleanser (oil based), then followed by a water-based cleanser (water based).

The first cleanser is useful for cleaning your face from make up, skin care products, excess oil, and pollution. Meanwhile, the second cleanser is in charge of removing sweat and dirt left on the skin.

3. Exfoliate regularly

Exfoliation is a technique used to remove dead skin cells. This technique consists of two types, namely:

  • Physical exfoliants, ie exfoliating using a brush or scrub
  • Chemical exfoliants, namely exfoliation using chemical products, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid

The frequency of exfoliating your skin depends on your skin type. Generally, you are advised to exfoliate 2-3 times per week so that the skin pores are not clogged.

If you have acne-prone skin, you are advised to avoid physical exfoliants products as they can irritate the skin.

4. Using beauty products labeled noncomedogenic

To prevent clogged pores, you are advised to choose beauty products, both cosmetic and skin care, which are labeled noncomedogenic. This label indicates that the product is specially formulated and does not contain ingredients that can clog skin pores.

5. Applying retinol

Retinol is often associated with antiaging and acne-prone skin treatments. However, substances belonging to the retinoid group can also remove dirt and dead skin cells, making them quite effective at preventing clogged pores.

Besides doing some of the ways above, here are some other ways that you can apply to prevent clogged pores:

  • Avoid touching your face when your hands are dirty.
  • Avoid using natural oils, such as coconut oil and olive oil, for the face.
  • Limit consumption of fast food or oily food.
  • Do routine skin care according to age and skin condition.

If you experience skin problems after taking the various ways to prevent clogged pores above, don't hesitate to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
