Some Pregnancy Myths for Girls

Here are five myths about pregnant girls and the facts:

  • Heartbeat
Typically, a baby's heart rate ranges from 110 to 160 beats per minute. However, there is a myth that if your baby's heart rate is faster than 140, then you are pregnant with a girl. According to research, there is no difference between the heart rate of boys and girls while in the stomach. Indeed, there are studies which state that the heart rate of baby girls is faster than boys. However, that only happened shortly before delivery.
  • Stomach shape
If your belly looks high or widens in the middle, then according to the myth you are pregnant with a girl. However, this statement is just a myth. The gender of the baby cannot affect your abdominal muscles. The shape of the belly of pregnant women varies from person to person. This depends on body shape, abdominal muscles, weight gain during pregnancy, and gestational age.
  • Vomiting
Very frequent vomiting during pregnancy/ morning sickness? Myth says you are pregnant with a girl. This myth may have some truth. According to research, women who experience severe morning sickness are more likely to give birth to a baby girl. That's caused by the hormone hCG which triggers morning sickness, tends to be higher in pregnant women carrying baby girls. The condition of excessive vomiting is called hyperemesis gravidarum. But keep in mind, this condition can also occur in mothers who are carrying male babies. So, it's not absolute that more vomiting is a sign of being pregnant with a girl.
  • Craving for sweet or sour foods
When you are pregnant with a girl, your appetite changes. According to the myth, you will prefer or crave foods with a sour or sweet taste. From a medical point of view, this condition can occur because pregnant women experience hormonal changes that affect their sense of smell, not because of the gender of the baby.
  • Looks unattractive
There is a myth that if you are pregnant with a girl, your face will look dull and unattractive because your beauty is absorbed by the baby. On the other hand, if you are pregnant with a boy, your face will look prettier. However, that is just a myth.

If knowing your baby's gender is important to you, don't believe in myths. It is recommended to do a pregnancy ultrasound to find out the sex of your baby. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to give a picture of the baby in the womb. Ultrasound is usually performed between the 18th and 20th weeks of gestation, to assess the condition of the fetus and determine its gender.

In addition to ultrasound, the characteristics of a girl's pregnancy can also be detected by testing the pregnant woman's blood and amniotic fluid. However, this test costs a lot of money. Therefore, this procedure is only carried out in a special laboratory, not for commercial use.

So before believing the characteristics of pregnant girls, check the truth again from the medical side. To be more certain, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist for an ultrasound examination of pregnancy. Don't be in a hurry to prepare the baby's equipment before you are absolutely sure of the gender.
