This infection can occur due to being bitten by an infected mouse, holding an infected mouse, or consuming food or drink contaminated with rat droppings.

Fever rat bites cause a flat or slightly prominent rash, red or purple in color, and sometimes resemble bruises. There are 2 types of rat bite fever, namely rat bite fever streptobacillary (more common in North America) and rat bite fever spirillary (occurring in Asia).

The initial symptoms of rat bite fever are the same as the initial symptoms of other infectious diseases . However, as the infection develops, there are several different symptoms of rat bite fever streptobacillary with symptoms of rat bite fever spirillary .

Symptoms of a rat bite streptobacillary

Symptoms of rat bite fever streptobacillary include:

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain or swelling
  • Rash

Bi symptoms it usually appears 3–10 days after being bitten by a rat, but can appear more slowly up to 3 weeks later after the rat bite wound heals. Within 2-4 days after a fever, a rash on the hands and feet may appear. This rash is red with small bumps. One or more joints then become swollen, red, or painful.

Symptoms of rat-bite fever

Symptoms that occur in rat bite fever spirillary is:

  • Fever possible disappear or occur repeatedly
  • Swelling or bite wound turns into an ulcer
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Rashes all over the body or only in the area around the bite wound rat

Symptoms of rat bite fever spirillary usually appear 7–21 days after being bitten by a mouse.

If rat bite fever is not given proper treatment, complications can occur in the form of pus formation in the body cavity (including the abdominal cavity), infection of the liver , kidney, lung, heart, brain and nervous system. That is, rat bite fever can be very dangerous and can be life threatening.

First Aid in Mouse Bite Wounds

Before starting to treat rat bite wounds, the first thing to do is make sure you are safe from mice. If the mouse that bites you is a pet and the owner is around you, ask the owner to secure the mouse.

To secure yourself from mice, make sure you don't make them afraid, because they will bite when they feel threatened.

The first aid to rat bite wounds is as follows :

  • Control bleeding by pressing the wound.
  • Wash and clean the wound with soap and warm water.
  • Cover the wound with a clean, dry bandage. You can also smear the wound with an antibiotic ointment from the doctor before dressing it.
  • If you have an injury to the finger, remove all rings from the injured finger to avoid the ring can not be removed when the finger is swollen.

If you are bitten by a mouse, you should immediately check to the doctor . This is because sometimes doctors need to provide tetanus immunization. Mouse bites on the face and hands are locations that need further examination because of the risk of causing scarring and disruption of movement.

You must also immediately see a doctor if signs of infection appear in rat bite wounds, such as fever. Your doctor may give antibiotics, such as amoxicillin , penicillin , erythromycin , or doxycycline , to treat infections. This antibiotic can be given for 7-10 days.

In severe rat bite wounds, your doctor may give antibiotics by injection. If necessary, surgery will be performed to clean the infected wound by a doctor.
