This is the Mask Choices for Corona Virus

COVID-19 can be experienced by anyone, including people under the age of 50 years, ranging from infants, children, to adults. However, unlike recent news, the Corona virus infection has a fairly low mortality rate in this age group.

Corona virus transmission can occur through sputum sputum, saliva, or mucus in the nose (snot) when people with COVID-19 cough or sneeze without wearing a mask. Transmission of the virus can also occur if a person with COVID-19 coughs or sneezes without covering his mouth and nose with elbow or tissue folds.

This is the Mask Choices for Corona Virus

The initial symptoms of Corona virus infection indeed resemble flu symptoms, namely fever, runny nose, dry cough, headache, and sore throat. However, some COVID-19 patients may experience severe symptoms of shortness of breath.

In children and adults under the age of 50 years, the symptoms of COVID-19 that appear are generally classified as mild, even not a few who have no symptoms at all (People without symptoms/ OTG). Not only that, the risk of death in COVID-19 patients under the age of 50 years is also relatively low.

Death rate of COVID-19 Patients whose Age is Under 50 Years

The case fatality rate (CFR) is the ratio of the number of dead victims to the total number of sufferers in a group.

In Indonesia, the death rate (CFR) due to COVID-19 in the age group below 50 years is an average of 1.5% with details per age group as follows:

  • Ages 31–45 years: 2.6%
  • 18-30 years: 1.1%
  • 6-17 years: 0.9%

In China, the mortality rate for people with COVID-19 under the age of 50 years is 0.1-0.3%. The mortality rate for the age group under 50 years in Italy is also quite low, ie 0.06-0.14%.

The mortality rate of the age group below 50 years is indeed lower than the older age group. However, you need to know that the number of people with COVID-19 in Indonesia could actually be more than the number recorded.

There are various causes of obstacles in determining the exact number of sufferers, ranging from inaccurate examination tools, insufficient number of examination devices and not reaching all regions in Indonesia, to the fear of the public to undergo examination and quarantine.

However, in general, it can be concluded that the percentage of death rates due to COVID-19 disease in the age group less than 50 years in Indonesia is around 1.5–2%.

Danger of COVID-19 in the Age Group Under 50 Years

Although the CFR is quite low, it doesn't mean that all COVID-19 sufferers under the age of 50 have the same low risk of death.

COVID-19 can be dangerous and cause severe complications, even death, in people under the age of 50 with the following conditions:

  • Having a weak immune system, for example due to HIV/ AIDS or malnutrition
  • Undergo certain medications, such as chemotherapy or long-term corticosteroids
  • Having a body mass index of more than 40 or obese
  • Have diseases of the respiratory tract, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Have concomitant diseases, such as diabetes, chronic kidney failure, cancer, high blood pressure, and heart disease

In addition, the risk of developing COVID-19 with severe symptoms is also higher in people who have the habit of smoking.

COVID-19 Prevention Steps

To reduce the risk of getting COVID-19 and break the chain of Corona virus spread, you need to take the following COVID-19 prevention steps:

  • Stay at home unless there is an emergency.
  • Avoid places that are crowded or crowded with people.
  • Always use a mask when interacting with others or if you are forced to travel outside the home.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and running water or hand sanitizers with an alcohol content of at least 60%.
  • Perform physical distancing.
  • Clean the house regularly.
  • Take medication regularly if you have certain diseases.

In addition, you also need to maintain strong body resistance by eating nutritious foods, such as fruits and vegetables, getting enough sleep, and managing stress well, for example by doing relaxation, yoga, or meditation.

If you experience the symptoms of COVID-19 as mentioned earlier, especially if you have been in close contact with someone who is positively infected with the Corona virus or have been in the endemic area (red zone) COVID-19 in the last 14 days, do immediate isolation and call the COVID-19 hotline on 119 Ext. 9 for further guidance.
