Understanding the Types and Triage Procedures for ED
Triage of ED is a process of determining or selecting patients who are prioritized for treatment in the hospital's Emergency Room (IGD) .
The process of determining this is done to get the order of treatment according to the patient's emergency level, such as a condition of minor injury, severe injury that can be life threatening in minutes and hours, or has died.
IGD Triage Type
In the IGD triage system, there are 4 color categories. The four color categories have meanings that are tailored to the patient's condition, namely:
1. Red category
Red-category patients are the first priority (resuscitation area) patients who need immediate help. Criteria for patients who fall into this category are experiencing critical conditions that require immediate medical help.
2. Yellow category
Patients in the yellow category are the second priority (area of action) which also requires immediate help. However, patients in this category are not in critical condition.
3. Green category
This category belongs to the third priority (observation area). Patients in this category generally experience minor injuries and are usually still able to walk or seek help themselves.
4. Black category
The black category is only for patients who are no longer possible to be helped or have died.
Triage Procedure for ED Patients
The triage procedure starts when the patient arrives at the Emergency Installation. The doctor will immediately conduct a brief and quick examination to determine the patient's condition.
This short and quick examination includes examining general conditions, vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, breathing), medical needs, and the possibility of survival. After the examination, the doctor will determine the color triage category that is appropriate for the patient's condition.
If you are in the red category, the patient will be immediately given medical treatment in the resuscitation room, and if further medical action is needed, the patient will be transferred to the operating room or referred to another hospital.
If you are in the yellow category, the patient can be moved to the observation room. Patients in this category will be treated after the patient in the red category has finished.
While patients in the green category can be transferred to outpatient care, and if the condition allows the patient to be allowed to go home.
For patients who have died, the black category, can be directly transferred to the mortuary.
This triage status will be reassessed periodically, because the patient's condition can change at any time. If the patient's condition changes, the doctor will also immediately re-triage. For example, patients in the yellow category can move to the red category when the condition gets worse.
