Papiledema is caused by an increase in pressure in the head. The pressure inside the head can increase due to several things, including:

  • Pus buildup in the brain (brain abscess)
  • Swelling of the brain
  • Inflammation of the protective membranes of the brain (meningitis)

How to treat Papiledema

Treatment for papiledema will be given according to the condition of the cause. If the cause of papiledema is not known with certainty, the doctor may suggest suctioning part of the brain fluid through lumbar puncture, and giving drugs to reduce the optic nerve swelling.

For papiledema caused by a brain tumor, the doctor will perform tumor removal surgery or chemotherapy. If papiledema occurs due to bacterial infection in the brain, the doctor will give antibiotics.

Another thing if papiledema occurs due to hypertension or high blood pressure. For this condition, the doctor will prescribe blood pressure-lowering drugs, such as diuretics, beta blockers, or ACE inhibitors.

Untreated papiledema can cause a variety of serious complications, ranging from seizures, strokes, blindness, and even death. Therefore, do not be lazy to do routine checks to the ophthalmologist, especially if you have experienced a visual impairment or other symptoms of papiledema.
