In addition to weight, a child's height is also a benchmark nutritional status and growth. Less height in children can be caused by several things, such as genetic factors, namely if both parents are short, imperfect growth, malnutrition, or the presence of certain diseases.

Ideal Child Height by Age

Ideal height is the range of normal body length according to age and gender. Ideally, the increase in body length from birth to 1 year of age is around 25 cm, from the age of 1 year to the age of 2 years is around 13 cm, and ages 2 years to 3 years are around 9 cm. While from the age of 4 years to puberty, children will experience an increase in height of about 5 cm per year.

Based on the standards of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia which refers to the World Health Organization (WHO), the ideal height for children are distinguished by age and sex.

Ideal height for boys based on their age is:

  • Age 1 year: 72 - 78 cm
  • Age 2 years: 82 - 92 cm
  • Age 3 years: 83 - 95 cm
  • 4 years old: 84 - 97 cm
  • 5 years old: 85 - 98 cm

While the ideal height for girls based on their age is:

  • Age 1 year: 70 - 78 cm
  • Age 2 year: 80 - 92 cm
  • 3 years old: 82 - 95 cm
  • 4 years old: 83 - 96 cm
  • 5 years old: 84 - 97 cm

How to Optimize Child Growth

The growth rate of each child is different - different. This is influenced by several things, such as genetic factors, nutrition, the presence or absence of growth stimulation, and growth hormone levels. However, there are several ways you can maximize child growth:

1. Give m be nutritious

Meet the nutritional needs of children by adopting a healthy diet. Give children a variety of nutritious foods, especially foods that are rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, such as calcium and iron. These nutrients can be obtained from fish, meat, nuts, and vegetables and fruits.

2. Give milk

Besides nutritious food, add milk in the children's daily menu. Choose milk that contains essential nutrients for growth, namely protein (amino acids), fat, calcium, magnesium, zinc , vitamin A, and vitamin D.

Additional good dairy products are those that contain quality protein, for example with essential amino acids obtained from sources of cow's milk protein, whey protein, and soy protein. Various nutrients are very much needed in the process of growing children, in addition to maintaining healthy bones. To add to the taste of children, now some dairy products are enriched with various flavors, such as vanilla, chocolate, and honey.

3. Make sure the child is enough t sleep and routine exercise

Applying a good sleep pattern to the child and getting used to it to exercise regularly can make the body grow optimally, because sleep and exercise are enough to increase growth hormone production.

There are several types of sports that are considered effective for raising the body, although it has not been scientifically proven. Among them are swimming, playing basketball, and jumping rope.

Efforts to optimize children's growth should be done from an early age until the child reaches puberty, because the child's height will reach its peak at the end of this period.

In order to ensure the growth of the child according to the reference above, bring him to the Posyandu or other health facilities, to be weighed and measured in height. Beware of growth disorders if the growth of the child is hampered or not in accordance with children his age.
