Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the obligations of Muslims throughout the world. Although pregnant women have concessions not to fast, but actually this worship can still be done if the body condition of the pregnant woman, the womb, and the fetus is healthy.

One of the studies conducted on pregnant women shows that fasting during the month of Ramadan does not affect the weight, length, and size of the fetal head. However, there is a slightly increased risk of babies born with low weight if pregnant women undergo fasting in the second trimester of pregnancy and third trismester.

If pregnant women who are going through fasting have a normal weight, a good lifestyle, and get enough nutrition, fasting will not have much effect on the fetus, because the body of pregnant women can still fulfill the nutrients needed by the fetus.

The following are some tips for fasting for pregnant women to stay fit and the fetus stay healthy:

  • Stay calm and avoid stress during fasting. Research shows that pregnant women who fast have higher stress hormones, and this can have a negative effect on their health and their fetus.
  • Avoid lifting heavy loads or walking too far. If necessary, reduce tiring household activities. If you feel tired, try to relax and take a break.
  • For pregnant women who work, check the possibility of whether the office can reduce working hours or provide additional rest periods during the fasting month.
  • The choice of food at dawn and breaking fast is very important for pregnant women who consume foods that contain complex carbohydrates and fiber, such as whole wheat, vegetables, and dried fruit.
  • Avoid sweet foods because it can make blood sugar levels rise and fall quickly. Changes in blood sugar levels that are too fast can cause weakness and dizziness.
  • Meet the protein requirements of cooked beans, eggs, fish, and meat.
  • Limit high-fat and ready-to-eat foods.
  • Keep enough for drinking water per day, which is around 1.5-2 liters each at dawn and breaking. Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks, such as tea and coffee, because it risks causing dehydration.

Pregnant women who fast should be aware of symptoms of conditions that might endanger the fetus, such as dizziness, fever, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, dry lips, or feeling very thirsty. These symptoms can indicate pregnant women are dehydrated.

Also be aware if there is weight loss in pregnant women who are fasting, reduced fetal movements in the womb, and abdominal pain such as contractions. If you experience it, pregnant women need to immediately see a gynecologist.
