Corrugated Nails, Recognize the Causes Here

Wavy nails can happen to anyone, but tend to be more frequent in the elderly. Wavy nails can be caused by many things, such as wounds, lack of nutrition, aging, to certain medical conditions.

Based on the pattern, corrugated nails can be divided into two, namely horizontal (transverse) and vertical (longitudinal) nails. Each of these patterns has different causative factors.

Vertical Wavy Nails

In vertical wavy nails, waves emerge from the tip of the nail to the cuticle. Vertical wavy nails are more common in the elderly, because as we get older, growth or cell turnover in the nails becomes slower.

Apart from age, there are a number of medical conditions that can cause vertical wavy nails, namely:

Iron deficiency anemia

This condition can cause the nails to wavy vertically and appear sunken like a spoon. In addition, anemia due to iron deficiency also makes the nails brittle and easily broken.

Trachyonychia

Trachyonychia is a condition in which the nails are thin, rough, brittle, and very bumpy. This condition is similar to nail abnormalities due to alopecia areata , lichen planus , and psoriasis.

Onychorrhexis

If vertical wavy nails are accompanied by changes in the texture and color of the nails, it could be a sign of onychorrhexis . Onychorrhexis is a medical term for the condition of brittle nails accompanied by exfoliation of the skin around the nails.

This condition can be caused by exposure to chemicals in cleaning nail polish, soap, or detergent, also by certain diseases, such as thyroid disease.

Horizontal Wavy Nails

Wavy nails horizontally with color changes need to be watched out. The line on the nail formed by horizontal waves is called the Beau line, and can be a sign of a health problem.

In very rare cases, a horizontal line on the nail can indicate arsenic poisoning. In addition, the line Beau can also be caused by:

  • Malnutrition.
  • Infection, such as measles, pneumonia, or fungal infections.
  • Side effects of chemotherapy.
  • Nail injury.
  • Metabolic disorders, such as diabetes.
  • Heart attack.

Because it can be caused by many things, corrugated nails need to be examined by a dermatologist, especially if accompanied by changes in the shape or color of the nails.

The treatment that will be given by a doctor to wavy nails is to treat the underlying disease. After the cause is resolved, the nail condition will improve on its own.
