Ways to Avoid Fake Vaccines

Counterfeit vaccine cases have troubled many people old, as the effect makes many people doubt the authenticity and safety of immunization children. In fact, there are easy ways for the little one to get a vaccine that is guaranteed to be authentic and safe.

Vaccination is the process of giving antigens in the form of living or weakened living microorganisms, or parts of it that have been processed in such a way as to cause the immune system of the recipient of the vaccine. The vaccine is given with the intention of stimulating the formation of active body immunity against certain diseases.

Ways to Avoid Fake Vaccines

What Means Fake Vaccines?

Fake vaccines are preparations labeled vaccines that do not contain antigens, so they do not stimulate the formation of active immunity, and make it useless. The authenticity of a vaccine can be determined after going through a laboratory examination by BPOM. From the results of the examination, fake vaccines generally contain ingredients as follows:

  • Infusion fluids .
There are several types of intravenous fluids, but generally it is a solution of sugar and electrolytes.
  • Solvent vaccines .
Solvents are usually a physiological saline or aqua pro injection which is safely absorbed by the body.
  • Gentasimin antibiotics .
In Indonesia, antibiotics to treat this infection are available in the form of fluids, eye drops, ear drops, topical drugs.

The results of an investigation by the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), Biofarma, Ministry of Health, and related agencies mention that the side effects of fake vaccines are suspected to be small. Because it is given diluted, then if gentasimin is given in the vaccine, the dose that enters the body will be quite low. Plus, the vaccine package is smaller (max. 0.5 ml) compared to gentamicin packaging (2 ml containing 80 mg). So, maximum gentamicin that enters the body counts around 20 mg.

After reaching the blood circulation in even smaller levels, the drug is then discharged through the kidneys. Based on this logic, the long-term effects of gentasimin can be called very small. Side effects in the form of kidney and hearing disorders can only occur if gentasimin is given more than once or in high doses.

In addition, infections or allergic reactions are short-term risks that may occur due to injections of fake vaccines containing intravenous fluids . In general, the appearance of an allergic reaction or infection that can occur will be seen within three days after the injection is done. Infection due to fake vaccines is estimated due to the vaccine manufacturing process that does not meet sterilization standards.

Obtaining Certainty of Safe Original Vaccines

According to the report of the Ministry of Health reported by Bio Farma, the circulation of fake vaccines is suspected to be no more than 1 percent in the Jakarta, West Java and Banten regions. Furthermore, the types of vaccines faked are from high-priced imported vaccine groups, from pharmaceutical companies such as GSK (Glaxo Smith Kline) and Sanofi Pasteur, namely Engerix-B as hepatitis B vaccine, Pediacel as a combination of Pertussis, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Hib, and IPV (polio vaccine containing dead Polio virus), and Havrix 720 as a hepatitis A vaccine. While the types of vaccines from Bio Farma have been used for adulteration in fake vaccine packaging, such as measles and hepatitis B vaccines.

Government hospitals and health centers generally provide vaccines for free. This free vaccine is obtained from an official manufacturer appointed by the Ministry of Health. Therefore, to get the original vaccine, you can go to government health care facilities, such as health centers, integrated health posts, or government hospitals. The Ministry of Health guarantees that vaccines distributed through government channels are genuine and safe.

The following are the least things that can be done, so that children are protected from fake vaccines:

  • Ask the doctor who will give immunization to check the vaccine expiration date, container and vaccine seal, vaccine label, temperature marker, and physical form of the vaccine. Checking the physical form of the vaccine can be seen from the presence or absence of deposits, color, and clarity. Distribution permits for original or fake vaccines can be checked on the BPOM website.
  • Observe the child's body reaction after receiving the vaccine. Check with a doctor immediately if there is something that is worrying.
  • Report if there is anything suspicious to BPOM via Halo BPOM 1500533 or to the Ministry of Health at (local code) 1500567.

If your child turns out to get a fake vaccine, make sure he or she is registered and verified by the task force handling the fake vaccine. Children who have been registered and verified can take part in mandatory immunization at the Health Service referral service location, which coordinates with the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI). This vaccination can be obtained free of charge at government health facilities.

Re-immunization should be given using the same or equivalent type of vaccine provided by the government. This is of course done if the parents agree, after getting a complete explanation.
