Red Eye Pain Medication Options
There are various ways to prevent pregnancy with contraceptives such as using condoms, birth control pills, birth control injections, and IUDs (spiral contraception). However, if you intend to permanently prevent pregnancy, sterile family planning is suitable for those of you who don't want to have children.
Sterilization is the most effective method in preventing pregnancy permanently. There are two types of sterile family planning for women that you can choose from, namely tubal implants (non-surgical) and tubal ligation (surgical). As for men, they can do a vasectomy procedure.

Tubal Implant
Tubal implants are a sterile, non-surgical method of contraception that is performed by inserting two small metals (essures) into the fallopian tubes (the tube that exits the egg) through the vagina and cervix. Each fallopian tube is filled with a metal.
This tool will irritate the inner lining of the fallopian tube and leave a scar (scar tissue). This scar over time can close the fallopian tube and prevent sperm from entering to fertilize the egg. The fallopian tubes can close completely three months after the procedure. Therefore, you are advised to use other contraceptive methods such as condoms or birth control pills during the process of thickening the wound.
According to research, the effectiveness of tubal implants in preventing pregnancy is 99.8 percent. This method has possible side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, cramps, dizziness, bleeding, or bleeding (spotting). However, most women are able to return to their normal activities after the procedure is completed.
Tuba Ligation
Tubal ligation is performed through a surgical procedure, namely by binding (closing) the fallopian tubes to prevent eggs from entering the uterine cavity, thereby causing permanent infertility. This method will also block the entry of sperm into the fallopian tubes. The process of closing the fallopian tubes is done by inflating the stomach using gas. After that, the doctor will make a small incision to reach the fallopian tube. There are several ways that doctors can do to close the fallopian tubes, namely cutting and folding/binding them, removing part of the tubes, or blocking the fallopian tubes with medical devices. After undergoing the tubal ligation procedure, here are the things you should pay attention to:
- It is recommended to rest for a few days or at least one day, before returning to normal activities. Your activities should be able to run normally about a week after the procedure is completed.
- You should be able to take a shower about 1 or 2 days after surgery. But remember, avoid rubbing or pressing the incision area for a week.
- Usually you can have sexual intercourse once the wound has healed and you have started to feel comfortable. However, consult your doctor first, because everyone's postoperative recovery is different.
- Your vagina may bleed.
- Your stomach may swell from the gas used to inflate the stomach. It can go away on its own for a day or so.
- You may have back or shoulder pain from gas in your stomach. But this can disappear after the body absorbs the gas.
Vasectomy
A vasectomy is a surgical procedure to cut or bind the sperm ducts, to prevent pregnancy. This procedure aims to stop sperm from entering a man's semen. This means, when a man ejaculates, the semen has no sperm in it and the woman's egg cannot be fertilized.Vasectomy is almost completely effective in preventing pregnancy. However, vasectomy has no impact on sexual life, such as the ability to erect, ejaculate, and semen volume. Vasectomy also has no effect on the production of the hormone testosterone, the hormone responsible for sex drive, the depth of the male voice, beard growth, and other masculine traits. It usually takes 2 to 4 months after a vasectomy for the semen to contain absolutely no sperm. Therefore, the doctor may suggest the use of other contraceptive methods before the vasectomy contraception effect is optimal.
What you need to know before taking sterile family planning
Before undergoing this procedure, it's a good idea to know the positive and negative sides of sterile family planning, namely:
- Positive side
Besides being effective and permanent in preventing pregnancy, sterile birth control does not affect your hormones. Your menstrual cycle and sexual desire are also not affected by sterile family planning. You may also be more relaxed and free during sexual intercourse because you don't have to be afraid of pregnancy. - Negative side
Sterile family planning is indeed the most effective in preventing pregnancy. However, the chance to get pregnant still exists (though it rarely happens). Pregnancy may occur when you find out that you are pregnant during the procedure, or if surgery or tubal implants are not performed properly. If pregnancy occurs, your risk of having an ectopic pregnancy will be higher.
This procedure does not prevent you from getting sexually transmitted diseases. It is recommended that you use a condom to avoid contracting the disease.
Remember, sterile family planning is a permanent method of preventing pregnancy. After undergoing this procedure, you can no longer have children. Some women who undergo sterile family planning may regret it, because something might happen that makes them want to have more children.
Sterile family planning procedures, especially tubal ligation, can indeed be restored. But don't get your hopes up, because your success rate in having children will be very low. Fallopian tube repair is not possible if you have a tubal implant.
Consider as much as possible before undergoing sterile family planning. Communicate with your partner and make sure you no longer plan to have biological children in the future. If you are confused about choosing the right contraceptive, you can consult a gynecologist.
