Beware of Pubic Head Lice
When you blink, the glands on your eyelids produce a small amount of tears to moisten your sense of sight and remove foreign objects from it. More tears are produced when you yawn, laugh out loud, or cry. However, there are some people who may experience persistent watery eyes.
In addition to fluid containing salt (tears), other glands in the eyelids also produce oil. This substance can prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.Causes of Watery Eyes
Watery eyes can occur when the glands that produce oil don't work properly. This makes the tears evaporate quickly and makes them dry faster. It is this dry eye that stimulates excess tear production, causing watery eyes. Watery eyes can also occur due to a blockage in the tear ductThere are various conditions that can cause watery eyes, including:
- Weather or environmental factors around the eyes, such as smoke, wind, or excessive light.
- Tired eyes.
- There is a foreign body or chemical irritant in the eye.
- Flu.
- Allergies.
- Inflammation of the eyelids.
- Infection of one part of the eye as in conjunctivitis.
- Lashes grow in or out.
- Drug side effects.
- Certain diseases, thyroid disorders, chronic sinusitis, tumors, and Bell's palsy.
- Side effects of radiation therapy.
Watery eyes are also associated with age. This condition is common in infants and people over the age of 60.
How to get rid of watery eyes
Most of the time, watery eyes don't need special treatment because they get better on their own. But sometimes, this condition can be a problem that interferes with activities and comfort so it requires special treatment.
Here are some ways to deal with watery eyes, depending on the cause:
- Compressing the eyes with a warm wet towel several times a day can help clear blocked tear ducts
- You can use eye drops to treat dry eyes.
- Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat watery eyes caused by conjunctivitis or an eye infection.
- If the cause is allergies, taking antihistamines can help.
- Medical measures can be taken to treat ingrown eyelashes or foreign bodies in the eye.
- Your doctor may recommend a surgical route if your tear duct is blocked.
But if the condition has not improved, surgery may be an option.
Actually, treatment may not be necessary if watery eyes do not interfere with your daily activities. However, consult an ophthalmologist immediately if you experience prolonged watery eyes accompanied by pain, reddening of the eyes, irritation, bleeding, bruising around the eyes, severe headaches, visual disturbances, or even making you unable to see at all.
