Maybe many have heard the terms midwife and doula. However, many also think that midwives and doulas have a similar role. Even though they both accompany pregnant women, the duties of a midwife and a doula are very different, lho!

A midwife is a health professional who can provide medical assistance to pregnant women from pregnancy, childbirth, until the baby is born. To become a midwife, a person must first graduate from midwifery education.

Meanwhile, doulas are not medical personnel, but professionals who have been trained and certified to assist pregnant women. The doula is in charge of providing emotional and physical support, as well as information needed by pregnant women from pregnancy to postpartum.

This is the difference between the roles of a midwife and a doula

Broadly speaking, the differences between midwives and doulas are evident in the type of service. Midwives provide medical assistance to pregnant women, while doulas focus more on psychological services.

If described in detail, the tasks that a midwife can perform are as follows:

  • Perform checks during pregnancy to monitor the health condition of the fetus
  • Providing recommendations related to food, types of exercise, medication, and general health information to pregnant women
  • Provides knowledge to pregnant women regarding pregnancy, childbirth, and baby care
  • Assisting pregnant women in planning the delivery process
  • Guiding pregnant women during labor
  • Helping pregnant women during and after giving birth normally

Unlike the midwife, doulas are not allowed to participate in any medical procedures. However, often a doula is needed to bridge communication between pregnant women and medical personnel. Usually pregnant women have started to be accompanied by a doula since the second or third trimester.

The doula's job is to help pregnant women to create a safe and emotionally comfortable state during their pregnancy. Doulas also provide support to pregnant women in going through each phase that they have to go through.

Some of the services doula can provide include:

  • Teach pregnant women relaxation and breathing techniques
  • Helping pregnant women to understand labor procedures and possible complications
  • Helping to make the birth plan come true
  • Teaches childbirth techniques for comfortable delivery
  • Accompany and encourage pregnant women during childbirth
  • Make pregnant women who are in the process of giving birth feel calm and comfortable, for example by giving him a massage and giving him a drink or snack
  • Give praise and support when the mother is just starting the breastfeeding process.
  • Helping new mothers understand how to care for a baby properly.
  • Helping mothers and other family members to bond with newborns
  • Ensuring that the mother gets adequate rest, eats regularly, is hydrated, and feels comfortable.

The period of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding is a long process and can be challenging for some people. Well, at this time midwives are "big brothers" who will make sure you and your baby are healthy. Meanwhile, a doula is a "friend" who will understand your complaints and always help and accompany you.

So, if you need someone who can always accompany, encourage, calm, and help you from pregnancy to postpartum, a doula is the answer. However, if you are experiencing physical complaints regarding your pregnancy, the more appropriate person for you to meet is a midwife.

To find the right midwife or doula, you can seek information from relatives who have used the services of these two professions or read reviews on the internet. However, keep in mind that not all pregnancies are the same process.

Sometimes, there are pregnant women whose pregnancy or mental condition cannot be handled by a midwife or doula and must be taken to an obstetrician. Therefore, it would be better if you consult your doctor first to make sure your pregnancy condition can be handled by midwives and doulas.
