Corona Anticipation, When to Go to the Hospital?

One suggestion for people who suffer or are suspected of having a Corona virus infection (COVID-19) is to isolate themselves at home if there are no symptoms or mild symptoms. Even so, you need to know when to do a self-examination to the hospital.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-CoV-2 or better known as Corona virus. This is a new type of virus from the coronavirus group. Because it is not well known and spread very quickly, Corona virus infection has caused many fatalities and spread to almost the entire world.

Corona Anticipation, When to Go to the Hospital?

Criteria that Require a Hospital Examination

The government has established 132 referral hospitals to handle COVID-19 cases. However, due to limited health facilities and medical personnel, not everyone who feels symptoms of Corona virus infection is recommended to go directly to the hospital.

In addition, this viral infection can actually heal by itself only with treatment at home, if symptoms are mild.

Referral hospitals have adequate isolation rooms and tools to carry out examinations and handle severe cases, so those who are confirmed to be positive and experience severe symptoms are prioritized.

According to the protocol issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Health, you can immediately go to a referral hospital if you have both of the following conditions:

  • Having a fever above 37.9 o C accompanied by symptoms of respiratory disease, such as coughing, shortness of breath, runny nose, or sore throat
  • Have been in contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive or has a history of travel or living in an area that is endemic COVID-19 (both at home and abroad) in the last 14 days
However, to protect the people around you from potential contagion, you should contact the COVID-19 hotline at 119 Ext. 9 first. If it does meet the criteria, the health department can pick you up and take you to the nearest health service facility or COVID-19 referral hospital.

Meanwhile, if you have a history of contact with people who are positive for COVID-19 or have been in an endemic area of the disease but do not feel any symptoms of COVID-19, you are advised to carry out isolation independently for 14 days from the first contact or day travel.

If during the isolation period symptoms occur as mentioned above, check with the referral hospital or call the COVID-19 hotline.

What about people who don't have a contact history or are leaving?

If you don't have a history of contact with COVID-19 sufferers or travel to COVID-19 endemic areas but experience symptoms of fever or symptoms of respiratory illness, such as coughing, runny nose or shortness of breath, you don't need to go to the referral hospital immediately.

Simply check with your nearest doctor, take your prescribed medication, and get enough rest. In addition, you are also advised to do independent isolation at home. If during this isolation the complaint is burdensome, report it to the nearest doctor to get further treatment.

If you have not experienced symptoms of COVID-19 and have never been in contact with sufferers of COVID-19 or traveled to COVID-19 endemic areas, you still need to apply physical distancing to avoid contracting the Corona virus.

You also need to remember, even if it is asymptomatic, you can carry the Corona virus and pass it on to others. So, physical distancing is also useful to prevent the spread of Corona virus.

Stay away from the crowd, do not leave the house except for urgent matters, and keep implementing preventive measures by washing your hands regularly and strengthening your immune system.

Not everyone is advised to go directly to the COVID-19 referral hospital. What is recommended is only people who have a high risk of infection. Because, many sufferers of COVID-19 are treated in a referral hospital, so the risk of contracting the Corona virus while here is also high.

Visiting a COVID-19 referral hospital even though it does not meet the referral criteria will only increase your risk of being infected with the Corona virus and then spread it to the wider community.

Therefore, it is a good idea to visit the nearest doctor or chat with the doctor on the Alodokter application first to get information or advice regarding Corona virus infection or COVID-19.

To find out how likely you are to be infected with the Corona virus, or whether you need to be checked in to a referral hospital, try the Corona virus risk check feature provided free by Alodokter.

If all of the above health protocols are implemented properly, it is hoped that the spread of Corona virus infection can be controlled and we can immediately be free of epidemics of this disease.
