Signs of Pneumonia in Infants
Many parents do not recognize symptoms or signs of pneumonia in infants. This causes the disease to often be handled too late.
Here are some signs and symptoms of pneumonia in infants:
- High fever.
- Shortness of breath or the baby appears to have difficulty breathing.
- The nose of the developing baby is deflated while breathing.
- Baby's breath sounds.
- Cough cold.
- Babies do not want to suckle or eat.
- Chest or stomach pain.
- Babies look nervous and weak.
- Lips and nails look blue.
Babies affected by pneumonia due to viral infections can sometimes also experience vomiting and diarrhea.
Calculating Infant Breathing Rate
To determine whether the baby is congested or no, parents need to know the normal respiratory rate of a baby. Infants aged 2 to 12 months usually breathe as much as about 50 times per minute. Whereas for children aged 1 to 5 years, the normal breathing rate is around 40 times per minute.
Parents can check the baby's breathing rate by opening the baby's clothes, then seeing his chest movements while breathing. Count the number of times the baby's chest expands to breathe in one minute. If the baby breathes faster than the normal respiratory rate limit, he experiences shortness of breath.
Handling Pneumonia in Infants
If your child shows symptoms or signs of pneumonia above, then immediately take it to the pediatrician. The doctor will do a thorough examination and may suggest a blood test or X-ray to confirm the diagnosis of pneumonia.
If your child is diagnosed with pneumonia, then the doctor will provide treatment according to the cause. In cases of pneumonia caused by bacteria, doctors will give antibiotics.
While in pneumonia caused by viruses, antibiotic drugs are not needed. Pneumonia due to viral infection usually resolves on its own in about 4 weeks. Even so, the doctor will still monitor the condition of the baby and provide medication to relieve the symptoms.
In order for the Little One to recover immediately, make sure the fluid intake and nutrition are properly fulfilled. Mother can still give breast milk or formula milk, as recommended by the doctor.
In cases of severe pneumonia, where the baby appears very weak, does not want to drink or eat, and there are respiratory failure, seizures, or signs dehydration, hospital care is needed.
Parents' symptoms and signs of pneumonia need to be known to parents so that they can be identified immediately. If you see these symptoms in your child, bring them as soon as possible to the nearest doctor or hospital for treatment.
Pneumonia in infants should not be considered trivial. To prevent this disease, parents need to complete infant immunization on schedule, and keep babies away from people who are sick and exposed to pollution, such as cigarette smoke.
