Get to know the causes of buzzing ears

Buzzing ears are a symptom of an underlying condition, such as an infection or blockage in the ear, ear injury or a circulatory system disorder. The following are some of the factors that might be the cause of buzzing ears:

  • Long exposure to loud sounds
Most ear buzzing cases are related to hearing loss due to noise (noice-induced hearing loss ). Continuous noise or loud noises can cause damage to the inner ear organs. This condition often occurs in construction workers, pilots, or musicians. A very loud sound, even if it only happens once, can also cause the ears to buzz. For example, the sound of a bomb blast.
  • Blockage due to dirt in the ear
Earwax blockage can cause irritation to the eardrum, allowing you to experience buzzing ears. It is recommended to clean the ears regularly.
  • Ear infections
Middle ear infections or commonly called otitis media can also cause buzzing ears. After the infection is cured, generally buzzing ear complaints will also disappear. For ear infections to be treated properly, you need to get proper treatment from a doctor.
  • Elderly hearing loss
This condition is known as presbycusis, which decreases the auditory nerve sensitivity, with age. It usually occurs from the age of 60 years, with symptoms of decreased hearing ability accompanied by buzzing ears.
  • Men suffering certain diseases
There are several health problems that can trigger buzzing ears, including heart and blood vessel disease, benign tumors in the auditory nerve, hearing loss, Meniere's disease, high blood pressure, neck or jaw disorders, and head injuries or neck.

How to Prevent buzzing ears

Prevention of buzzing ears can be done in several simple ways, such as:

  • Wear ear protectors when moving near very loud sources of sound, such as in studios or music concerts, in rooms with lit engines, or in construction sites.
  • Rest your ears every one hour while wearing an earphone to listen to music. Avoid installing earphones with full volume for a long time. Adjust the volume of the earphone to less than 60%.
  • Maintain healthy blood vessels by routinely exercising and adjusting your diet, to avoid buzzing ears due to vascular disorders.

Although buzzing ears are common and often disappear on their own, but if it has been going on for a long time and feels very disturbing, immediately consult your ENT doctor.
